An exciting new reality in modern Brazilian music, Instrumental Social, is the debut album from Carlos Pontual, one of Brazil's most celebrated guitarists. The album mixes the new urban sounds of Brazil using technology, with a unique dose of live instrumentation where ‘60s soul-jazz form the basis of well-crafted compositions. Needless to say, this is no revival work. Electronic beats and subtle hip-hop rhythms mesh naturally with live drums and percussion, vintage keyboards and nylon guitars, with the jazzy trumpet of Brazil’s samba funk maestro and founder of legendary samba funk group 'Banda Black Rio' - Mr. Barrosinho.
Born in Rio De Janeiro in May of 1972, Carlos Pontual started his first musical studies with piano lessons at the tender age of 05, by the time he hit his 10th birthday he was comfortable sitting at the piano, when at 13 he finally picked up the guitar for lessons in classical and jazz. He studied Composition at University of Rio de Janeiro while playing the bass on composer ‘Osvaldo Pereira’ samba group “O Cara do Tempo”, soon after Carlos became the producer of Mr. Barrosinho, one of Brazil’s most celebrated trumpeter and founder of infamous Samba Funk 70’s super group – Banda Black Rio, on an album entitled – ‘O Sopro do Espirito’ (A Spirit’s Blow), which was considered by Ed Motta as one of the best jazz albums of recent times.Composer and guitarist of the instrumental group ‘Caldo Grosso’, whose musicians came to record his first two records, Carlos participated as musical director and composer of Circus group ‘Atrupelados’. He also won best soundtrack for “Geraldo Voador” from director Bruno Viana in 92 as well as with "Guarnicê de Cine-Video (1995)”.Alternating between musical direction, multi instrumentalist, producer, composer, arranger and singer, Carlos Pontual has recorded with Vocal Group Equale and American keyboard player Alex Veley, among others. In 1999 his independent debut – ‘Miolo do Som’, was considered by musical producer Arnaldo DeSouteiro (A Trip to Brazil, Dom Um Romão, Ithamara Koorax) as “a work of a brilliant musicianship, impossible to describe". In it Carlos mixes MPB (Musica Popular Brasileira) with jazz and rock – from Brazilian legends Mutantes all the way to Frank Zappa. In a MTV pool in 2003 Carlos Pontual was considered one of the best Brazilian guitarists next to Andreas Kisser (Sepultura), Lúcio Maia (Nação Zumbi) and Lanny Gordin via the work he has, since 2000, been doing with Nando Reis, one of the most important singer/songwriters in the country and founder of 80’s group TITAS - recording with him “Infernal” e “A Letra A”, "Ao Vivo MTV" e "Sim e Não". among other albums (Universal Brasil).Lately Carlos has just finished working on a ‘Black Music’ MPB (Music Popular Brasileira) album, with his friend and Brazilian comedian – Loroza. As well as continuing producing ringtones for MOTOROLA and soundtracks for MTV - BrazilINSTRUMENTAL SOCIAL is directly linked with Carlos Pontual's true roots in Jazz, Samba/Soul and live arrangements. An exciting new reality in modern Brazilian music, Instrumental Social mixes the new urban sounds of Brazil using technology, and quite a dose of live instrumentation where ‘60s soul-jazz and Swing Bossa beats mix with a dash of ‘70s samba-funk, forming the basis of well-crafted compositions. The sophisticated melodies dance out of the stereo as though they come straight from somewhere inside: intimate, clean, and beautiful. But they’re of course not all mellowness, as Pontual adds just the right touch of funkiness and solo mastery to keep the listening experience soothing and yet alive. Echoes from Sly Stone, Wes Montgomery, Jeff Beck and Grant Green are heard on the disc; Brazilian masters João Gilberto, Eumir Deodato and Walter Wanderley also come to mind. But, needless to say, this is no revival work. Electronic beats and subtle hip-hop rhythms mesh naturally with live drums and percussion, vintage keyboards and nylon guitars, with the jazzy trumpet of Brazil’s samba funk maestro and founder of Banda Black Rio - Barrosinho. The global influences are vast, but they’re merely the springboard from which Pontual jumps to create his absurdly cool musical universe.Combining a distinctly new, sample free eclectic mix of influences from one of Brazil’s best modern guitarist, with a live performance carrying more verve than any of their peers on the nu jazz scene, Carlos Pontual appeals to the discerning listener as does the masters that influenced him throughout his career. For all information on Carlos Pontual email - artists @ curvemusic . net
